• Are you tired of struggling with nagging back or joint pain?
  • Do you have trouble keeping the benefits that you get from massage or chiropractic?
  • Do you want to take charge of your health and learn practical tools that you can use anywhere, at any time, to find comfort?

The Balance Posture Method/Spinefulness is a practical, self-help method to reduce or eliminate back and joint pain, re-align your spine, and improve your posture. It is based on more than 40 years of research on populations with little or no back pain. Learning to make simple shifts in your posture and movement can dramatically reduce your pain.

It began when Noelle Perez-Christiaens, a yoga teacher from Paris, discovered that modern posture was misaligned compared with ancient posture and posture from less industrialized parts of the world. B.K.S. Iyengar, the famous Hatha Yoga teacher, gave her some clues that led her eventually to this insight. She has written many books, most of which are in French, and the work is called “Aplomb” in France.

Jean Couch of the Balance Center in Palo Alto, California, studied with Noelle and also continues her own research, traveling to many countries regularly to observe posture and document healthy examples. Dana did her certification training with Jean in 1996-1997. Jean has renamed her method “Spinefulness.” For more information about it, check out the Balance Center’s website. or Jenn Sherer’s Spinefulness website.

Balance is based on studying healthy populations, rather than unhealthy ones, such as in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. It is about aligning yourself with gravity, rather than fighting it. Aligning with natural laws reduces tension and increases strength, comfort, and relaxation. This is the natural posture of our species, as we can see from all children under 3.

You learn to align yourself first from a teacher, and then as you practice, it becomes a new way of living and moving that integrates into every aspect of your life. You have tools that you can use anywhere.
